Do you hate writing about yourself? Here is how to get over it.
There are two types of people in the world, those who love talking about themselves, like really, really. Then there’s the other camp. Those who would rather suck a lemon than go there. What if I was to tell you that when you do it with authenticity and start to embrace your ‘youness’ it can actually feel pretty good. Be fun even. Getting over this hurdle is key to creating copy that truly reflects your brand and connects to your audience.
So, how do you get there?
Firstly release that breath you are holding in, grab a coffee and relax. As honestly learning to enjoy it is a big part of the challenge. And nothing is enjoyable with a tight jaw and tense shoulders so let it all go. Do a little dance if it helps. Ok, now you are ready.
Get To The Truth
Wow, that sounds a bit intense, hey? Before you go digging too deep it is probably closer than you think. What are some things about you that are true that your clients might like to know? Ignore the voices telling you ‘that’s boring, stop bragging etc, etc. Write them down. If you are not sure where to start, here are some easy questions to answer to bring out some of the juice.
What do you care about?
Why do you do what you do?
What do you love about it?
What gets you through a hard day?
How do you relax?
Why did you choose to live where you do?
There you go, read back over your answers. There are heaps in there that can probably inspire an ‘About’ page on your website, bio for your socials or even book blurb. Often we freeze because we do not have a starting point. Once you take those first few steps, momentum picks up. On we go…
Go With Your Gut
Back to those voices, they often get in the way between the line you were going to write and the one you actually do. Turn them down. They are disturbing your flow. The copy and ideas you have before you start worrying what other people will think or talking yourself out of are probably pretty good. Self-doubt has a lot to answer for. There is no easy fix for overcoming this monster. It takes consistency, belief and maybe another cup of coffee. The more you learn to trust and go with your gut the stronger and more authentic your branding becomes. Flex that muscle, baby.
Make Your Own Rules
Here is the big secret: there are no rules about writing about yourself. You do not have to copy whatever everyone else is doing. In the words of Fleetwood Mac, go your own way. Use – – – hyphens, use italics, tell everyone how you like your coffee. Mix it up, write long blogs, write short sentences. How you write about yourself and what you write about yourself and your brand is really up to you. Thrilling, isn’t it? Another secret, you can edit later. Often getting it out is the hardest part. Figuring out your style, embracing your voice and being authentic will make writing heaps more fun for you and your reader.
