Scrolling through Instagram on a Sunday night, whilst mindlessly catching up on (insert your latest Netflix binge here) because you know – multitasking, it’s easy to believe everyone out there is reealllyyy bossing it. Meanwhile, here you are trying to fight off the Monday scary’s with a tub of Ben and Jerry’s. Careering looks so easy on the glossy highlight reels of Chelsea’s ‘high-flier’s, clutching glasses of champagne in Blue Bird and nailing business lunches in Sexy Tuna or whatever the F it’s called. And how do they even have time for the blow dries?
Hold the self-sabotage (we all do it) there is a whole load of chaos, tears and melt-downs going on behind the scenes that a lot of business gal’s don’t talk about. That’s a chat we all need more of in our lives. Being honest about the messy backstage lives of business owners and the cost of the relentless pressure in keeping all the balls in the air. It’s so easy to be intimidated by the polished profiles on Linked In, flawless skin and exciting lives of people in our dream industries on the bright lights of Insta. The reality? Most of us are looking forward to putting our PJ’s on at the end of the day and hustling hard to pay for the facials.
Interior designer, writer or lawyer – whatever industry you choose it takes time to climb the ladder. And the climb is at times sweaty, challenging and teaches you a lot about yourself. There will be ass holes, sleepless nights and lots of moments you want to jack it all in. A bit like botox, it’s painful and expensive. Social media leads us all down a rabbit hole of comparing ourselves to people younger, prettier and more ‘successful’ than what we feel we are. Instead of being honest about what success means to us we strive for an illusion. Before making progress, it is SO important to make sure you are on a path that really makes you happy.
Ergh, so what gets you on it? The simple stuff, baby. Find ways to stay true to yourself whether that’s yoga, reiki or strolling down the aisle of Sainsbury’s for some ‘you time’. Remember, you are important. You are good at what you do and you do not need to be at every networking event or available 24/7 to prove that. What fun is climbing a mountain unless you enjoy the climb? If that means treating yourself to a binge at Zara or taking a weekend-off, do it. We all have our own coping mechanisms. One guaranteed way to ease the pressure and laugh at the absurdity of the hustle? Stay posted for more blogs on business and life without the botox. Expect true stories of meetings on toilets and toasting with bollinger when you can just about afford the tube home.
